Description

A delicious and hearty steak sandwich featuring thinly sliced ribeye steak seared to perfection, caramelized onions, creamy Havarti cheese, and a flavorful herb butter spread on a fresh baguette. This easy-to-make sandwich is perfect for a fulfilling lunch or dinner, combining tender steak and melty cheese with aromatic dill and garlic butter.

Ingredients

Scale

Herb Butter

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed

Steak and Sandwich

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 lb ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced into half rings
  • 4 slices Havarti cheese
  • 1 baguette, sliced lengthwise

Instructions

  1. Prepare Herb Butter: In a small bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with crushed garlic and diced fresh dill. Mix well to incorporate all flavors and set aside for later use.
  2. Slice Steak: Thinly slice the ribeye steak. For easier slicing, freeze the steak for 10-15 minutes beforehand to firm it up, making it easier to cut into thin strips.
  3. Heat Oil: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over high heat until hot and shimmering, ready for searing the steak.
  4. Cook Steak: Add the thinly sliced steak to the skillet, season with salt to taste, and cook over high heat until the pieces are golden brown and cooked to your desired degree. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Caramelize Onions: In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and add the sliced onions. Sauté slowly for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn golden brown and sweetly caramelized. Remove from heat once done.
  6. Spread Herb Butter: Spread the prepared herb butter evenly on both halves of the sliced baguette to add flavor and moisture.
  7. Assemble Sandwich: Layer the cooked steak slices evenly over one half of the baguette, followed by the caramelized onions, then top with slices of Havarti cheese.
  8. Broil to Melt Cheese: Place the assembled sandwich halves on a baking sheet and broil in the oven for about 2 minutes, or until the Havarti cheese melts and becomes bubbly.
  9. Serve: Remove from oven, slice into desired portions, and serve the steak sandwiches immediately while warm and melty.

Notes

  • Freezing the steak slightly before slicing helps achieve thin, even cuts for better texture in the sandwich.
  • Caramelizing the onions slowly over medium heat enhances their sweetness and depth of flavor, complementing the savory steak.
  • Adjust salt according to your taste preferences, especially considering the saltiness of the cheese.
  • For a crispier baguette, you can lightly toast the bread before spreading with herb butter.
  • If you prefer, substitute Havarti with other melty cheeses like provolone or Swiss.
